Juvenile halls are infamous for the sexual abuse that occurs within their walls. For some, the abuse spilled out of the walls of these detention centers after they were released – they were abused by their probation officers. Recently, over 23 probation officers have been removed from their positions, with many others resigning on their own accord after the accusations; some officers had already retired or left the county.

The accusations of sexual abuse include different juvenile halls, including Camp Scott, MacLaren Children’s Center, and Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall.

Many of the complaints of child sex abuse are very similar. Some victims claim that they were molested in bed and watched by officers while they used the restroom or showered. Some claim that they were raped in administrative offices. Many victims were allegedly threatened with solitary confinement if they spoke up and were even promised early release if they stayed silent. Another victim claims that she was abused by the probation officer that was supervising her; she was only 13-years-old at the time and was molested in a motel room in South Los Angeles.

The county is facing about 1,500 complaints of child sex abuse. This has resulted in a mass exodus of probation officers and other staff at these detention centers.
